Gozo, a dream
of tranquillity, is possibly one of the best spots in the
Mediterranean to holiday in. The little 9x4 island remains
unspoilt, yet offers the enhanced comforts of careful planning
and relaxed development.
The beautiful
thing about the island is that it has so many different and
contrasting faces, which nonetheless blend so naturally with
one another. It has managed to capture the joys of modern
living without losing the traditional values of its calm character
and historic past.
Above the rubble
walls and the prickly pear hedges stand the green hills. Wherever
you look the sea is never more than a stone's throw away.
It is a fact, Gozo's amazing coastline that stimulates the
imagination so strongly. Tiny creeks, beaches of red sand,
turquoise bays, majestic rock formations, stretches of limestone,
criss crossed with tiny saltpans, high cliffs falling in a
sheer drop into the clear waters - a swim or a stroll can
take you into a timeless atmosphere of sheer relaxation.
The Gozitans
have jealously guarded their traditional way of life. They
cultivate the fertile land, as in the beautiful Lunzjata valley
and are at the same time expert fishermen. Villages in Gozo
reflect a way of life simultaneously rural and refined, superbly
proportioned squares, carved balconies against golden facades.
You can't claim to know a Gozitan before you see his church.
As you explore Gozo, that mystery will no doubt be solved.
Malta's sister
island is reached by boat, a better way for the visitor to
feel the mystical atmosphere. Once past the Blue Lagoon you
are in the waters of Gozo.
